Night Shift specs

Night Shift specs set out the machine settings, label wording and stop checks needed after normal supervision ends. They focus on restart limits, stack orientation, blade wear signs and the handover details that matter at 22:00 as much as they do at first light.

Restart limits after handover

Night Shift specs list the checks, controls and operator notes needed for unattended or lightly supervised production.

Night work needs fewer assumptions and tighter prompts at the cell. Material grade, cut length tolerance, sheet orientation and pack condition are recorded alongside factors such as Highveld dust, Durban humidity and load-shedding restart risk. The spec is written so an operator can verify the next run without paging through a long setup file.

A Night Shift pack should include the first accepted part, the blade status at handover and the exact job name stored on the controller. Photos help, but the useful part is the note beside them that states what changed, what was locked, and what must not be touched before restart. That record reduces mixed stacks, repeat trims and overnight waste.

What the sheet records

The document names the active tooling, the machine memory reference and the checks to complete before unattended running continues. Operators get plain instructions for loading, count verification, offcut handling and exception reporting. Buyers and supervisors get wording that matches the job card, carton label and stored programme.

Include the cutter model, material being processed, blade or tool code, and one image of the current setup screen or loading area. If the spec must align with Cutters, Applications or Edgework, name those pages exactly so the notes match the right process.

  • Blade condition noted at handover

Conditions that change night runs

South African production sites often hand over between day and after-hours crews with different experience levels, so labels and machine prompts must carry more of the load. OR Tambo freight cut-offs, warehouse despatch windows and backup power limits can all affect when a batch may safely continue. Older cells also need explicit notes on guard positions, sensor cleaning and manual reset points.

Coastal air can mark stored steel and alter how often exposed parts need wiping before the next stack is loaded. Inland dust builds up around guides, photo-eyes and extraction points, which changes inspection frequency during longer runs. Where power interruptions are common, the spec should state whether the job may resume from memory or requires a fresh first-off approval.

Notes to gather before issue

Use Night Shift where after-hours crews need simpler checks, clearer labels and fewer missed setup steps.

Prepare the Night Shift sheet while the machine state, tooling choice and accepted sample are still in front of the team. Record the programme name, revision, material code, pack quantity and any operator warning that must stay with the job. Keep that note with the project file so the next recall uses the same settings and checks.
